Dr. Clack came to SFA in August of 1996, after having been employed at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center for four years. She is currently employed as an Associate Professor of Biotechnology and Director of Development for the College of Science and Mathematics.  

Dr. Clack received her B.S. degree in biochemistry from Texas A&M, and her M.S. and Ph.D degrees in molecular and cell biology from the University of Texas at Dallas. She is originally from Beaumont, Texas, and has lived most of her life in the Dallas area. 

 

 

The following are a few of her current research projects:

  • Studying the structure and function of enzymes activated by calmodulin
  • Plant molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer of Myosin Light Chain Kinase when activated by Ca2+/Calmodulin.
  • Fingerprint Analysis of the Endangered Hibiscus Dasycalyx using Intersimple Sequence Repeats (ISSR).
  • Tissue culture and Biochemical Studies in Camptotheca Acuminata, the Chinese “Happy Tree”
  • Pharmaceuticals from Native American Plants.

The major techniques used in her laboratory are site-directed mutagenesis, PCR, Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), UV and Visible absorption spectroscopy, Circular Dichroism, RAPD and ISSR analysis, and tissue culture of mammalian, plant and insect cells.  Currently she has 14 graduate students working with her.  She enjoys both teaching and research and encourages undergraduate research.

Chameleons will only drink from a running or dripping water source.  I have tried fountains which re-circulate the water, however, the water gets contaminated and makes the chameleons sick.  The best system I have come across is a home-made device.  I have rigged up a gravity driven drip system that works great.  I use a fish tank air regulator to control the water flow rate.  I use screen covered jars for catching the water.  You can see below how the male chameleon is drinking.    It is imperative that you see your chameleon drink water every day.  If they do not drink every day they will develop gout in their legs- not a good situation.
